Responsible investing is also known as socially conscious , “green” or ethical investing and involves any investment plan that prioritizes social and environmental well-being alongside financial gain. Ethical investing provides long-term value for investors through exemplary governing mechanisms and an active involvement in society and the environment. A socially responsible investor will encourage and support companies that promote environmental sustenance, social justice and corporate governance, and often avoid companies involved with the production, promotion or sales of harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco and weaponry.

The Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) were developed by an international group of institutional investors in response to the increasing requirement for environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues in investment practices. The United Nations Secretary-General convened the process of creating the principles.
The six Principles for Responsible Investment are:

1. The incorporation of ESG issues into investment analyses and decision-making processes
2. Active ownership and incorporation of ESG issues into investment policies and practices
3. The seeking of appropriate disclosure on ESG issues from entities invested in
4. The promotion of acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry
5. The undertaking of appropriate collaborations to enhance the effectiveness of implementation of the Principles
6. Regular reports of activities and progress towards implementing the Principles

The Ethisphere Institute has been publishing the World’s most Ethical (WME) company rankings for the last six years by reviewing hundreds of companies and evaluating applications through its proprietary methodology involving in-depth research and analysis. The list for 2013 includes companies in dozens of industries across the globe. The Ethisphere Institute, in their 2013 list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies, featured Wipro.

At Wipro , investors are our key stakeholders. Investors’ benefits stem from benchmarking and comparing companies against the primary criteria of governance, performance consistency and transparency of financial disclosures. This allows investors to make informed decisions on short-, medium- and long-term investments. When companies meet and exceed these criteria, the investors are in turn benefited through better returns. At Wipro, we aim to transfer the benefits of the company’s performance to our investors by providing best-in-class-governance practices, voluntary disclosure of facts in financial statements wherever appropriate and actively engaging with our investors.

Ultimately, providing the option of responsible investing increases every ethical company’s chances of sustaining their business as well as paying forward the benefits to their investors.
